CryoCell: Oldest Cord Blood Bank

CryoCell, or Cryo Cell, was founded back in 1989, which makes it the first private cord blood banking facility worldwide.  For three decades, this company provided the services of cord blood management and storage.  The first cord blood unit was stored by CryoCell in 1992.  Since then, the company grew into a multinational cord blood banking facility, present in 87 countries with more than half a million clients globally.  Each cord blood unit that was released for medical purposes was completely viable upon defrosting.

If you want to see how CryoCell (or Cryo Cell) performs in comparison with other banks read this article with our cord blood banking reviews. You can also understand which are the most important features to consider when choosing a cord blood bank in this article.

Whereas certain blood banks do not perform cord blood sampling, processing and storage on their own, CryoCell possess operational procedures and capacity to sample, process, test and store cord blood by its own, meaning that each step in umbilical cord blood management is fully monitored and operated by CryoCell.  All laboratories in CryoCell are operating according to the standards postulated by Dr. Linda Kelley, who is one of the most famous cord blood banking auditors worldwide.  The staff working in CryoCell laboratories represents the highly qualified working force, which enables CryoCell to manage cord blood according to the highest standards and to ensure that the highest possible number of stem cells was obtained from a given sample.  CryoCell possesses a powerful network of affiliates globally to ensure that the umbilical cord blood may be successfully collected, processed and stored internationally.

Cryocell employs a list of standards in order to ensure the best possible quality and safety of cord blood and cord tissue management.  CryoCell (Cryo Cell) laboratories operate according to the stringent guidelines in order to ensure a sterile environment, and constant temperature, humidity and particle count within the facility.

CryoCell developed a program that aims to educate future parents about the significance of umbilical cord blood and cord blood tissue banking.  The educational programs are organized in the form of events and conferences, where parents may learn what are the benefits of storing umbilical cord blood and cord blood tissue banking.  CryoCell (Cryo Cell) works constantly on improving and expanding the range of services in order to make the best use of collected cord blood samples.

With a partner company, Saneron CCEL Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on finding new treatment modalities for severe and complex health conditions that have been challenging to treat to date.  Conditions such as Alzheimer ’s disease, myocardial infarction, stroke and spinal cord injury represent the core of investigation at Saneron.

Collection Kit by CryoCell (Cryo Cell)

The new, re-designed and improved collection kit was released by CryoCell recently.  Following good results of a study that lasted for two years, CryoCell developed a more advanced collection kit for the collection and transportation of cord blood and tissue.  This collection kit provides approximately thirty times better and efficient temperature control when compared to standard kits.  The kit is specifically tailored to secure the consistency of samples during the transportation.  The new design introduces vacuum-insulated materials that are resistant to temperature fluctuations, ensuring the highest possible preservation of collected material.  Temperature measurement is installed into each collection kit providing the constant monitoring of the sample inside temperature.  Any temperature fluctuation that is outside a referent range will trigger an alert mechanism and notify staff that temperature is exceeding normal values. Cryo Cell ranks well in the collection kit segment in our cord blood banking reviews.

CryoCell uses eco-friendly materials in the production of collection kits, which are 100% recyclable and reusable.  The collection kit still includes five vials for the collection of samples.  Inside each vial, an FDA approved anticoagulant called CPD is stored.  Studies have demonstrated that collection bags containing CPD used by CryoCell may preserve up to fifty percent more stem cells, compared to standard samples.  Mother ’s blood and plasma are also preserved in order to potentially be used for testing.  This way, potential transplant in the future is made easier and the blood and plasma may be used for the purpose of scientific investigation.

PrepaCyte Technology Used By CryoCell

PrepaCyte-CB is the premium, state-of-art technology for processing and management of cord blood.  This technology preserves a significantly higher number of viable stem cells for transplant purposes, while at the same time reduced the number of red blood cells, which reduces toxic products that may jeopardize the viability of stem cells within the sample.  Better quality of stem cells sample provides a better engraftment following transplant, less time spent in the hospital and better chances for recovery.

Five Chambers Storage Bag Creation of Cryo Cell

Five compartment storage bag is the new, FDA-approved method for the preservation of collected umbilical cord blood.  This additionally increases the viability of stem cells by 10%. Many parents have concerns regarding the number of times that the collected material will be ready for use for transplantation or investigation purposes. Multi-compartment storage from CryoCell enables parents to use their samples several times in the future.  The current research focuses to broaden the therapeutic use of stem cells in various fields. The possibility of use of stem cells multiple times gives the parents more options for the future treatment of various diseases.  Within the processing laboratory at CryoCell, each sample is divided into five equal components and stored for future use.  Studies have shown that this increases the viability of stem cells by ten percent.

Accreditations Achieved By Cryo Cell

US Food and Drug Administration introduced regulations back in 2005 that concern adequate methods for cord blood management.  CryoCell operates in accordance with FDA guidelines and regulations in order to ensure the best possible quality of cord blood and tissue banking.  Two main points have to be followed in order to operate according to FDA regulations.  This includes Good Manufacturing Practices and Tissue Practices (GMP, GTP), which ensure from Cryo Cell the high standards in preserving the viability of stem cells, and the safety of stem cells including the prevention of transmission of an infectious agent.  CryoCell has also been approved by AABB and this is the first private cord blood bank to be accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation for Cellular Therapy (FACT).   Institutions like Cryo Cell that follow FACT quality standards have been shown to provide significantly higher success rates compared to cord blood banks that do not hold an accreditation from FACT.  AABB accreditation is also one of the most important issues to be considered when choosing the cord blood bank.  AABB concluded, after a complex and detailed inspection, that CryoCell (Cryo Cell) meets standards for cord blood management.

Transplantation history in CryoCell

CryoCell, or Cryo Cell released dozens of samples for transplantation for the FDA-approved indications.  This includes neurologic diseases such as brain and spinal cord injury, blood disorders including leukemias, lymphomas, and thalassemia, metabolic conditions such as type 1 diabetes and autism. The research in the field of regenerative medicine continues to grow and indication field for stem cells grows rapidly.
