So you’re sure to find the right tricycle for you.

It was just in the cradle, now your baby is making its first steps in the nursery and on the meadow. At this point you can think about the first children’s vehicles. For the first wheel the right time has come with approx. 2 years.

First vehicles – preparation for the wheel

The upright gait is one of the most distinctive human characteristics. It allows the freedom of both hands and many complicated movements. No wonder your baby’s first steps are special moments. Pretty first vehicles provide the child with other, faster modes of transport in addition to running. Small vehicles also train the coordination of hands, feet and targeted rapid locomotion. The many cute sliders and four-wheel wheels from 1 year are ideal for this. Between the 18th and 24th month the first wheel can be remembered. To do this, the child must be able to walk safely, stand and maintain balance. Too early tests on the wheel would definitely disappoint. As a result, children often have an aversion to this vehicle. So it’s better to wait a month or two longer than let the child practice on it too early.

Selecting the right impeller

The new wheel should look pretty, of course. Maybe you’ll find a cool model that will even delight your dad. However, safety and functionality must be at the forefront of the purchase decision. The impeller must be the right size. This means that the entire sole of the child’s foot must rest on the ground when sitting on it and the handlebars must be within reach without contortions. The saddle shall provide the child with a secure fit and shall not be slippery. If it is too narrow, the toddler has bad hold, too wide saddles restrict the legroom. The frame must be stable and secure. It is irrelevant whether the impeller is made of wood or metal.

A rubberized handlebar prevents slipping

The handlebar should have rubberized grips with a stop edge on the outside to prevent sweaty hands from slipping off. A handlebar impact limiter increases safety. Tyres are available in foam, solid rubber or pneumatic. For good driving and off-road capability, the pneumatic tyres for the wheel are in front. The tyres spring better and can therefore compensate for uneven ground better. The first wheel should have 10 inch tires, the following wheel needs 12 inch tires.

Adjustable saddle and handlebars

How fast your child grows has not escaped you. Therefore, rather buy a wheel where the saddle and handlebars can be adjusted in height.
The wheel can have brakes, but it doesn’t have to. The child brakes with his feet and two-year-olds are often overwhelmed with the brake. The feeling for the handbrake on the wheel only develops in children over 3 years of age.
If all these points are considered, you can choose the wheel with the greatest design.

Running wheel for children – load capacity and weight

An impeller must not have a load capacity of 50 kg. The average weight of two-year-olds is around 13 kg, of three-year-olds 16 kg and of four-year-olds 18 kg. A small basket on the handlebar is also hardly loaded with weighty things. Approx. 25 kg to 30 kg load capacity are therefore sufficient for the wheel. If the load capacity is higher, however, this is not an obstacle to purchase. On the other hand, it is not unimportant what the overall weight of the children’s vehicle is. A good impeller weighs between 3.3 kg and 4.8 kg. The wooden wheels are lighter than the metal models. In the open country, where not all roads are flat, less light wheels prove their worth better if they have pneumatic tyres. However, you must be aware that sometimes you have to carry the cog for longer distances at the beginning. For smaller children, a buggy can be taken along in which the child can relax and with which the wheel can be transported.

The wheel is good for that

A good running wheel is not only a great children’s vehicle that makes outdoor activities a pleasure, but also a very good training device. The wheel is used to practice very versatile mental abilities and movement sequences. At the same time, balance, hand-foot coordination and general attention to the surroundings and possible obstacles are trained on the wheel. The child practices all this with a form of locomotion that is faster than walking and requires more skill than the previous sliders and four-wheelers. So let your child practice and ride on the wheel very extensively, take the wheel with you during as many outdoor activities as possible. The safer your child will be and the better it will be prepared for the future bike.

Safe on the road with the wheel

As safe as the pretty children’s vehicle is, you have to do a lot to ensure that your child is safe with the little two-wheeler. Very important: Your child should already wear a well-fitted children’s helmet on the outdoor wheel. The first small falls are inevitable. For the first cycling exercises on the wheel, you should choose a quiet, safe place with a reasonably level floor. Cycling also includes the first education in road safety. The child must learn to brake at a safe distance from the curbs and wait for you or other adult companions. Driving in the lane must be practiced intensively so that the little biker does not drive against fences, trees and other people. Your child must also train the feeling for sloping terrain, otherwise he or she will become too fast downhill and will no longer be able to steer and brake his or her wheel properly. For these exercises, your child should already have gained some safety on his wheel. Do everything for the safety of your child while practicing, but also allow him challenges like the small slope, a few roots on the forest path or the ride through a splashing puddle of rain. It strengthens his self-confidence.

How much will the new wheel cost?

The price does not necessarily reflect the quality and safety of the wheels. Between different manufacturers and models can lie several hundred euros. But you can already buy a very good, new wheel of tested quality and from the brand manufacturer at prices between 60 dollar and 100 dollar. There are even really cool two girls in sleek biker designs. In such advantageous price ranges, the winning models were even determined during tests according to the ISO 9001 test standard of the TÜV test. The size as well as additional equipment and very special designs naturally also play a role in the price. For all sizes, however, there are excellent wheels in the lower price ranges. After all, your child needs not only a wheel, but many other important things.

Conclusion on the right wheel for toddlers

The safety of the children’s vehicle must be the first consideration when making a purchase decision. The wheel must be the right size and good for the child to ride and steer safely. According to strict safety criteria, various impellers in the more favourable price ranges score “good” and “very good” in tests. It is important for the child to have the necessary walking safety and height for cycling and to be able to practice sufficiently with the small bike under supervision.
